Canadian Gun Culture and Firearm Regulation, 1867-1935

Seminar in Matteo Millan’s course “Politics and Violence in the Contemporary Era”

On Monday, 15 December 2025, the seminar “Canadian Gun Culture and Firearm Regulation, 1867–1935” was held at Aula M, Palazzo Liviano (Padua), as part of the course Politics and Violence in the Contemporary Age, taught by Matteo Millan. The event was jointly organised within the framework of the research projects GlobArms and EU-GUNS.

The seminar was delivered by Blake Brown (St. Mary’s University), who examined the evolution of gun culture and firearm regulation in Canada from Confederation to the interwar period. Drawing on legal, political, and social perspectives, the talk explored how firearms were embedded in Canadian society and how state authorities progressively developed regulatory frameworks in response to changing perceptions of violence, public order, and citizenship.

The event contributed to broader discussions on the historical relationship between weapons, state power, and society, offering a valuable comparative perspective within the wider field of gun history.
